Share files between a windows 7 computer and 2 vista computers?

December 31st, 2009

I want to share files between 3 computers. One of the vista computers is connected to the network via network cable and the other 2 are connected via wireless. I was wondering if there were anyways to share files between the computers. I have tried using the homegroup feature on windows 7 but it basically needs all machines to be running windows 7 and currently I am having trouble and I am confused with vista’s file sharing.

You can network computers running different versions of Windows and share files between computers, you will need to set up a workgroup rather than a homegroup" http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows.

How do I check to make sure I am NOT sharing files through my router?

December 31st, 2009

Today I became wireless for the first time (woot). How do I check to see I am not sharing files with anyone in my network? I’m also paranoid that my neighbor may steal my connection. I’m a noob so please be gentle. Thanks.

As for filesharing, that’s controlled totally by your operating system. Just make sure all forms of LAN filesharing are turned off in your operating system and nobody will be able to access a thing on your computer via LAN or WLAN.

It’s exceedingly unlikely that your neighbours are stealing your bandwidth. If you’re concerned though, in addition to WPA2 passphrase, use a MAC address whitelist if your router supports such a feature to prevent any clients other than your own devices from accessing the network. A MAC address whitelist, as you probably guessed, is basically the opposite of a blacklist; instead of adding *banned* clients to the list and allowing everybody else, you add *allowed* clients to the list and everybody else is *banned*. So you would add only the MAC addresses of your own devices to the list.

If you can’t use a MAC address whitelist, you might be able to use a hostname whitelist instead, which is less secure since you can change a device’s hostname at will, but it’s still better than only a WPA2 passphrase.
