How do I check to make sure I am NOT sharing files through my router?

December 31st, 2009

Today I became wireless for the first time (woot). How do I check to see I am not sharing files with anyone in my network? I’m also paranoid that my neighbor may steal my connection. I’m a noob so please be gentle. Thanks.

As for filesharing, that’s controlled totally by your operating system. Just make sure all forms of LAN filesharing are turned off in your operating system and nobody will be able to access a thing on your computer via LAN or WLAN.

It’s exceedingly unlikely that your neighbours are stealing your bandwidth. If you’re concerned though, in addition to WPA2 passphrase, use a MAC address whitelist if your router supports such a feature to prevent any clients other than your own devices from accessing the network. A MAC address whitelist, as you probably guessed, is basically the opposite of a blacklist; instead of adding *banned* clients to the list and allowing everybody else, you add *allowed* clients to the list and everybody else is *banned*. So you would add only the MAC addresses of your own devices to the list.

If you can’t use a MAC address whitelist, you might be able to use a hostname whitelist instead, which is less secure since you can change a device’s hostname at will, but it’s still better than only a WPA2 passphrase.

when sharing torrent files do you risk the chance of getting caught the same as when you are downloading them?

December 1st, 2009

i am running peer block for win 7 and i was wondering if you can be caught when you are sharing torrents with other …. because i know they can catch you when you are downloading it by getting your ip but can they catch you when you are sharing it? if so does peer block block ppl who want your ip when sharing the torrent file?

dude, even if they catch you, how can they proove anything?
for all anyone might know for their info you could of had some random friend over to fix your computer and instead he did something illegal, and when they ask who that friend is you tell them
Alejandro hernandez lopez who went back to mexico.

done, especially if you live with someone else, if everyone denies everything then they have no case.
laptops are the best thing to use, go use someone elses wifi, do something and their isp goes back to that, you leave and they have an ip adress with no computer to pin it to.

by the way, if you know where to get/or have cod modern warfare 2 then tell me, i’m trying to find some one with that file.

just dont use your real name or anything on whatever you got, and they can’t ever proove anything under a shadow of doubt, they can try circumstantial evidence but without physical proof that you were the one behind whatever, they they don’t have anything.
deny deny deny

but don’t do child porn, thats bad
