Warner Music Group & The Bonehead

August 19th, 2009

If only his Daddy knew what sort of a bonehead he’d turned out to be.

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/11/warner_music_ceo_admits_suing_.html

———-

Edgar Bronfman, the CEO of Warner Music Group, admitted that waging war on consumers was kind of a bonehead idea at the GSMA Mobile Asia Conference. Look, he actually admits to being wrong!

“We used to fool ourselves. We used to think our content was perfect just exactly as it was. We expected our business would remain blissfully unaffected even as the world of interactivity, constant connection and file sharing was exploding. And of course we were wrong. How were we wrong? By standing still or moving at a glacial pace, we inadvertently went to war with consumers by denying them what they wanted and could otherwise find and as a result of course, consumers won.”

Boy, that’s just great, Edgar. Really heartfelt, we’re all impressed. But you know a better way of admitting that starting a way against consumers was wrong? Stop suing your consumers. Jackass. Until that happens, you’re all talk.

Weird Al Yankovic - Don’t Download This Song with lyrics

June 6th, 2009

Copyright owner:
Sony/BMG

Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge
To break international copyright law
By downloading mp3s from file-sharing sites
Like Morpheus or Grokster or Limewire or KaZaA
But deep in your heart you know the guilt would drive you mad
And the shame would leave a permanent scar
‘Cause you start out stealing songs, and then you’re robbing liquor stores
And selling crack and running over school kids with your car

So don’t download this song
The record store’s where you belong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don’t download this song

Oh, you don’t wanna mess with the RIAA
They’ll sue you if you burn that CD-R
It doesn’t matter if you’re a grandma or a 7-year-old girl
They’ll treat you like the evil, hard-bitten criminal scum you are

So don’t download this song
Don’t go pirating music all day long
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don’t download this song

Don’t take away money from artists just like me
How else can I afford another solid gold Humvee?
And diamond-studded swimming pools, these things don’t grow on trees
So all I ask is, everybody, please…

Don’t download this song
Even Lars Ulrich knows it’s wrong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don’t download this song…
Don’t download this song
Or you might wind up in jail like Tommy Chong
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don’t download this song…
Don’t download this song
Or you’ll burn in before too long
Go and buy the CD like you know that you should
Oh, don’t download this song

a knockout. Rip is a dazzling frontal ault on how corporate culture is using copyright law to muzzle freedom of expression. - Macleans Magazine

The sexiest film about copyright infringement Ive ever seen. CBC

An audience favorite at film festivals worldwide, this movie-as-mash-up shatters the wall between users and producers, as web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor invites audiences to remix his raw footage (at opensourcecinema.org), allowing them to become part of the film itself. An Official Selection at SXSW 2009 and the Audience Choice selection at Amsterdams International Doc Festival and the Whistler Film Fest, RiP! A REMIX MANIFESTO makes its DVD debut on June 30.

Featuring:
- Gregg Gillis (Girl Talk), a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs
- Lawrence Lessig, founder of Creative Commons and Stanfords Center for Internet and Society
- Cory Doctorow, technology activist and co-editor of the popular blog Boing Boing
- Marybeth Peters, U.S. Register of Copyrights
- The Mouse Liberation Front

A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

ACS:LAW: Solicitors Filesharing Blackmail scam

May 26th, 2009

UPDATE: http://www.beingscammed.com This is a call to arms to ALL people who want to safeguard the future of Filesharing. A Company called ACS:LAW has sent out threatening letters accusing people of sharing games and films and trying to get them to hand over money rather than going to Court. This is nothing short of BLACKMAIL.

Please review these Forums, there is a lot of useful information availiable here
http://www.slyck.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=44092&sid=267662251566e3882982f1b1fcb8eef6&start=3375

http://www.p2pfreak.com/forum/torrent-sites/1581-infringement-copyright-notice-two-worlds-6.html

I read with interest a comment you made in an interview with The Times regarding filesharing in the UK, you are quoted as saying “Mr Lammy, said that there was a big difference between organised counterfeiting gangs and younger people not quite buying into the system. He said: We can’t have a system where we’re talking about arresting teenagers in their bedrooms. People can rent a room in an hotel and leave with a bar of soap - there’s a big difference between leaving with a bar of soap and leaving with the television.

I would like to bring your attention to a very disturbing new trend, I received a letter from a Solicitor called ACS:LAW accusing me of sharing a file, a game in fact called the “Call of Juarez”, they said that they had “Forensic” proof that I had shared this file and that I had to pay them £565 or face a court appearance whereby I could be sued for “Significantly” more.

Until I received this letter I had not even heard of this game let alone shared it. In the letter ACS:LAW state that they had been passed the information by a company called “Logistep” and they had recorded my IP Address and had gone to the High Court to obtain a Court order forcing my ISP to release my private information so they could contact me. My ISP Virgin Media did this without informing me they had.

I was very distressed as I cant afford to pay the fine nor can I afford to pay a solicitor to defend me. I contacted the Law Society who confirmed that ACS:LAW are indeed a legitimate company, I did this as I believed at first it was a scam. I have contacted the Information Officer in charge of the Data Protection Register who informed me that ACS:LAW are NOT registered with them.

There is a LOT of things not right about this case Mr Lammy, an IP Address is NOT proof of a crime. Information regarding IP addresses can surely only be obtained in Criminal cases whereas I am being pursued through the Civil Court. This letter sent to me and thousands of others borders on blackmail.

ACS:LAW are using EXACTLY the same methods and even letter formats that a company called Davenport Lyons used a few years ago and which were described at the time by Which? Magazine and other consumer groups as Bullying. Davenport Lyons are at this time still under investigation by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) for their methods.

It seems that to date although thousands of these letters have been sent out to people the evidence claimed by ACS:LAW and before them Davenport Lyons has actually been tested in a Court of Law, as they rely on people paying to avoid going to Court.

I would urge you to investigate this company and what it is doing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely

Montt Mardié - We’re All The Pirate Bay (Hybrid Remix)

May 19th, 2009

EDIT: OK I realised the vocals were a bit low in the mix and I pulled back the kick and synth effect that some may find annoying. Here is a link to the slightly better MP3 file.

I could not find any suitable video so made this crap instead. Hope you like this version anyhow.
